In The Beginning

One question I get is how do you do it?  First comes an idea, which is sometimes the hard part.  I have lots of ideas, but they don't all turn into paintings.  Next I set up a still life (or go outside to find something I'd like to draw) & take photographs.  I often take 50 or more!  There's that delete button, so it doesn't matter how many I take - and more photos mean more possibilities.  I set this one up on a large white foam board.  You can see the desk lamp in the back right of this photo.  I wanted back lighting for long dramatic shadows.  Then I take a look at them on my computer, in Picasa. http://picasa.google.com/  It's a free photo editing software download and it's really good.  I fine tune the photo, resize & crop.  One of the set up photos is above and here's the finished drawing.

  2. Beautiful, amazing work.
Do you ever draw from life. I once took a colored pencil workshop and we painted a bouquet - it was an amazing experience, very freeing. I am not much good but found it very creative.

  3. You are very talented! I saw that you are from STL...I grew up in that area and most of my family is scattered all there! S. peters, Bridgeton, South County, Maplewood, Kirkwood, etc!

  8. First of all I love your work. I also love the way you explain your processes to get to your final painting. The transparencies of glass are so difficult to do. Very well done.

  16. I just saw your comment on another blog about wanting to do macro better. I thought I'd give you some totally unsolicited advice if you don't mind...I recently found out that if whatever is behind your focused item is at least a foot away, the image comes out much crisper.:)
