This was my fifth art fair and I'm learning a lot. This time I was able to borrow a<b> professional booth</b> from my artist friend <a href="http://www.watercolorsbyjeanmcmullen.com/">Jean McMullen</a>. Thanks, Jean!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9Vt36Bbj2lH0Gcgjgx2ko3Hy3OK6CiQG2kKFvLkUW9hb0dZ9SxV7JwnDvtIZAm2lpZ20BFqH2lYFraBLzOjIMofwM8F_3MGLxCuxxkJ5gwJONtUHUKoUT_OVUr56j41tSzl1fAcdNZYc/s1600/queeny+booth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9Vt36Bbj2lH0Gcgjgx2ko3Hy3OK6CiQG2kKFvLkUW9hb0dZ9SxV7JwnDvtIZAm2lpZ20BFqH2lYFraBLzOjIMofwM8F_3MGLxCuxxkJ5gwJONtUHUKoUT_OVUr56j41tSzl1fAcdNZYc/s320/queeny+booth.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I think this made a huge difference in presenting my work to the public. I did learn, however, to make better tags next time. I printed short blurbs about each piece (with the price) and taped it to the panel. The tape didn't stick very well, so I spent a lot of time putting them back up. Next time I'll attach the tags with velcro (duh). I loved this set up and wouldn't change a thing.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Talking to clients</b> - I'm learning about that, too. I feel much more comfortable selling myself and my work, now. However, there were a few times I think I could have closed the deal, but I let the client walk away.<br />
<br />
<b>Talking to the juror - </b>The juror was very nice and professional. She only spent a few moments in my booth and asked me to describe my work (in a sentence or two). Next time I'll have my "elevator speech" ready! I don't think I did a terrible job but I can do much better and it may make the difference in winning an award (I didn't).<br />
<br />
I'm looking forward to the next art festival! What have you learned?<br />

My new grandson Eli (5 grandkids, now!) was born a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I went to Seattle to help his brothers and parents. We also took a few days off and went to Whistler.<br />
<br />

<br />
I was glad I mustered the courage to take the ski lift - what fantastic views!<br />
<br />
Back home, I was thrilled to find out I had won third place in the <a href="http://www.annkullberg.com/show14.php">annual Colored Pencil Magazine competiton.</a><br />

I've been focusing on cityscapes & I'm gradually building a nice body of work. I'm working on Duralar, a brand of frosted acetate film. Several layers of pencil on the front and more on the back give it rich, saturated color. Here's what I'm working on now:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This one is of a restaurant in a south St. Louis neighborhood. I caught a waitress writing on the chalkboard outside, plus the fabulous light. No title yet, but maybe "The Daily Special". Any other ideas?</div>

I've been zeroing in on two things, shadows and reflections. I love doing cityscapes. I began doing cityscapes about six months ago, and I'm hooked. I love going outdoors to shoot the photos - a lot more fun than setting up a still life in my basement. I see people running around, going about their day, and I like to speculate about what they're doing. I love looking for shadows among the buildings or reflections in windows. Here's one I recently completed of a street in St. Charles, MO. It's across from one of the galleries I'm in, <a href="http://www.maomgallery.com/">Missouri Artists On Main Gallery.</a><br />

Actually, I'm a doer. I make lists & check them off. Today I checked off two new paintings and started another. I ordered new business cards, <a href="http://pencilartsociety.com/membership/susie-tenzer/">became a member of the Pencil Art Society</a> and started painting my dining room table black (it's dark cherry).<br />

<br />
This is my dining room/studio. I was using a drafting table, but when I started getting shoulder pain, I switched to my dining room table so I could draw on a flat surface. That's the buffet, converted into a computer desk. And yes, those are golf clubs, an important part of my studio. The painting on the wall was done by my husband's uncle, by the way.<br />

<br />
Here's a new one I'm working on, a scene from a small town near St. Louis. I'm changing the photo a bit to create more light coming through the trees. Right now I'm blocking in the main objects with one layer of color. After I finish that, I'll be ready to work on details and add more color. This is on Mylar, a frosted drafting film. I've used this material on my last four paintings and I love it! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZB_3veMG2WZG05V77soDHRRZTD5ycr7ksJvxqmJ42zQ55FbWyJeHpZ7L8laPErrntUoCmOK0h8aFS7Ea27auwtJbp8uTtwme94E7lxO9uJ0tpTK4Z6PDjhPq9V1NN9-wV7cKYSjD_Rvo/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZB_3veMG2WZG05V77soDHRRZTD5ycr7ksJvxqmJ42zQ55FbWyJeHpZ7L8laPErrntUoCmOK0h8aFS7Ea27auwtJbp8uTtwme94E7lxO9uJ0tpTK4Z6PDjhPq9V1NN9-wV7cKYSjD_Rvo/s320/002.JPG" width="256" /></a></div>
<br />
This new painting is in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/130549116/original-fine-art-cityscape-cafe?ref=pr_shop">Etsy Shop</a> It's 8" x 10", titled, "Kevin's Place". I took a lot of photos on a sunny, snowy morning and had my husband pose in front of this darling cafe. Using artistic license, I took out the snow and changed some of the back ground. I love the shadows and window reflections! Next month, I'll post more cityscapes. I love doing these city scenes! I'm inspired by the light and shadows, reflections in windows, the people and cars moving about. I'm working on a smaller piece in the same part of town:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMOVUFd44OJKbs512YAsHrWDyddno1633sBtxYLxMXxiY5u-d5oDDL3xrTHQHV0gVfhsrNOe15vXKtkc7lZEMrDntxTY9AkuUtNx6FYPNam3zWKN2mlOEAXYVGVvwOYejfGBGQG4k3bYM/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMOVUFd44OJKbs512YAsHrWDyddno1633sBtxYLxMXxiY5u-d5oDDL3xrTHQHV0gVfhsrNOe15vXKtkc7lZEMrDntxTY9AkuUtNx6FYPNam3zWKN2mlOEAXYVGVvwOYejfGBGQG4k3bYM/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

I'm just blocking in the bricks and windows now. I'll post the finished piece next month.Susie Tenzerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05396942366828912361noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574157460450462815.post-19089081922832525212013-03-03T08:57:00.000-06:002013-03-03T08:57:34.606-06:00New Series, New PaperI've started a new series which I've been thinking about for a year...cityscapes. I live near some eclectic urban areas in St. Louis and I want to paint some of them. I love to find bright, dramatic light on buildings and streets. I enjoy seeing people moving about doing their daily activities. So, I recently took a photo day with my husband, driving around the city in search of special shots. Here's one that caught my eye:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbArz1-R-BTy0YIqQU8YcudY-RY_REETRz4aYOLylaQ7mGKV_2n0r0mD-CpqPP70YUulGHgD8V3cAU7g_LVc6wa59d2J-oJ7Mu99OpgaZkkPohzGl2BivYnBxMMjkUPJsz8caL4YsWToo/s1600/Loop+puddle+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbArz1-R-BTy0YIqQU8YcudY-RY_REETRz4aYOLylaQ7mGKV_2n0r0mD-CpqPP70YUulGHgD8V3cAU7g_LVc6wa59d2J-oJ7Mu99OpgaZkkPohzGl2BivYnBxMMjkUPJsz8caL4YsWToo/s320/Loop+puddle+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the puddle with the reflection of that building. The orange and blue color combo, plus the three people really works. So, here's what I've done so far:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimQdNm4zLZQdEXiOwxBG3m_u6q8jFzE1niq-vyWl7dmwrjYHgbHOcDzppjnQu6RUAnSeXKZPhuxuI5A9xdAjLRtnneW43imq1J6aryIidB344RRRmmRM4pWaAxJyRBCH6fA8S-TmrJ7sU/s1600/wip+The+Loop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimQdNm4zLZQdEXiOwxBG3m_u6q8jFzE1niq-vyWl7dmwrjYHgbHOcDzppjnQu6RUAnSeXKZPhuxuI5A9xdAjLRtnneW43imq1J6aryIidB344RRRmmRM4pWaAxJyRBCH6fA8S-TmrJ7sU/s320/wip+The+Loop.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm trying out acetate (drafting film), which is brand new for me. I love it! It takes colored pencil great, with less layers. I can apply the color to both sides for a rich, saturated look. I've already done half the piece (it's 11" x 14") in only 3 days. I usually work 3 weeks on Stonehenge paper. I'll post the finished piece soon!Susie Tenzerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05396942366828912361noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574157460450462815.post-54832217840128332642013-02-04T08:07:00.002-06:002013-02-04T08:07:33.951-06:00Name That Tune, Uh, DrawingAre you old enough to remember the TV show, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N59iCNSBIcE">Name That Tune</a>? You had to name the song after hearing just a bit of the tune. I feel like that when I try to name my paintings. I have the image but can't think of the title.<br />

I just read an<a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Title-Your-Work-of-Art"> interesting article</a> with tips about names. <br />
<ul>
<li>think of descriptive words (shadows, trees, ladies walking)</li>
<li>which words stand out most?</li>
<li>is there hidden meaning? </li>
</ul>
Any ideas?<br />

I have two formal dresses that I wore to my children's weddings that I decided to try to sell. I only wore them once and they've been hanging in the closet, so I figured why not? I tried to come up with catchy ad titles to attract attention. <br />
<br />
<b> Prom, MOB, Formal, Strapless Dress, Size 8</b><br />

Boring, right? So I was looking at Craigslist for ad ideas, when I happened to see (on the left side of the page) something that says <a href="http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/all/">Best Of Craigslist</a> These ads are seriously funny! Some are crazy, sexy, or stupid. My favorite so far is:</div>

I don't literally stand on my head, but sometimes I turn the painting upside down. One of my favorite artist/authors is Lori McKnee and <a href="http://www.finearttips.com/2012/12/struggling-with-your-painting-turn-it-upside-down/">this article</a> describes the advantages of doing that. Turning the painting upside down allows you to see the composition differently. Turning your head to the side can sometimes do the same thing. Can you still see the focal point? How does your eye enter the composition and move around? <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwXwjn7GX3DVaXu_pthfUatwanvok552sQAv0jsY8Xb5rht3W3k5nFEu8x1PpyJnqshuiNoPdozFbVnvWNxWU2q2lzPiykGM10oMfEk2CueYw1Ql2VZ0YHyM-LEDwCsA8xX6QIND2LE9E/s1600/early+morning+ride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwXwjn7GX3DVaXu_pthfUatwanvok552sQAv0jsY8Xb5rht3W3k5nFEu8x1PpyJnqshuiNoPdozFbVnvWNxWU2q2lzPiykGM10oMfEk2CueYw1Ql2VZ0YHyM-LEDwCsA8xX6QIND2LE9E/s320/early+morning+ride.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a work-in-progress, from a series of city scenes. I can see the negative shapes of the sky better when it's turned upside down as well as how the composition is working.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My favorite method, though, of checking on how I'm doing is taking photos and looking at them on my computer screen. I suddenly see mistakes in drawing or in value a lot better by looking at a photo. Some artists use a mirror to do the same thing. I don't really stand on my head (I never could do that!). Do you use these methods to assess your progress?</div>

We taught at the same elementary school - I'm a retired teacher - and now we're friends in this new way. She's a jewelery and fiber artist and she excels at both mediums. We both juried into the <a href="http://www.bestofmissourihands.com/">The Best Of Missouri Hands</a>, a non profit artists' organization promoting excellence in the arts. We attended a conference together which was fun. She has several small boutiques each year in her home and invites her artist friends to sell their work. It's low-key and I've met some wonderful people.<br />

Here's my set up at her house. I pulled a few original paintings as well as some prints and cards from the galleries I'm in. Don't you think having an art show in a home is a great idea? I learn a lot. One of my favorite colored pencil artists is Ann Kullberg. Her <a href="http://www.annkullberg.com/">website</a> offers workshops and gallery images. She is a master artist, particularly of portraits. I have several of her books, but the one I look at the most is <u>Colored Pencil Portraits, Step By Step. </u> One idea I learned from this book is to <b>push values. </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU15mMblZYWYhhk8W_eV2KBrmIfg2cwoh5W4s6VAcHGKFiO8F-H-F-SeFji53B6aepBsXmcVWDlbuDSE9v-S-AueHtRVVgmmPnnVcKksdJmo1fWN0gk0r7koAAGCDBx7mNucRkQqC665U/s1600/listener.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU15mMblZYWYhhk8W_eV2KBrmIfg2cwoh5W4s6VAcHGKFiO8F-H-F-SeFji53B6aepBsXmcVWDlbuDSE9v-S-AueHtRVVgmmPnnVcKksdJmo1fWN0gk0r7koAAGCDBx7mNucRkQqC665U/s320/listener.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<b> The Listener by Ann Kullberg</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
This is a great example of one of her colored pencil portraits. She left the top portion of the pants stark white against a dark background. The contrast gives it punch! When I look at my own work as well as the work of others, what catches my eye (no matter the subject or medium) is strong value contrast.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXDJA7QLmOhGaqhbhcJFfzvrkdRNqY3nFmErMIypiGw0TzG5urFfEXpewFvRfK_IX1buANNafCOWvzl_vS7qNA6Em0tRuC45hAwxT8DYphvXBlsNtOrFutALE6gtMOipE-X9iFB2sKDhY/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXDJA7QLmOhGaqhbhcJFfzvrkdRNqY3nFmErMIypiGw0TzG5urFfEXpewFvRfK_IX1buANNafCOWvzl_vS7qNA6Em0tRuC45hAwxT8DYphvXBlsNtOrFutALE6gtMOipE-X9iFB2sKDhY/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I started a painting with this in mind, using back lighting to create strong value contrast. I've left some of the street and sidewalk white. The bushes in the middle will be the darkest value. I'll post this painting again, and hopefully what I'm learning from Ann Kullberg will show. Do you learn from other artists?<br />

It was two days of being on an emotional roller coaster! Looking back though, I think there were several things that made it a success.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlKdI8B2uLrscAinBkToVfi1g3gp95PUuaoJBhTAPxrL51P5IAg0QkcBr1tuxiyMTx5wEEjp0bn0YwfELisvws9ky4gbpvoXe35Z71S1AwRfPdWRQjBLrWTPwQjmGdNPprOFsC37Ar8oM/s1600/booth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlKdI8B2uLrscAinBkToVfi1g3gp95PUuaoJBhTAPxrL51P5IAg0QkcBr1tuxiyMTx5wEEjp0bn0YwfELisvws9ky4gbpvoXe35Z71S1AwRfPdWRQjBLrWTPwQjmGdNPprOFsC37Ar8oM/s320/booth.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A lot of people came into my booth. I ran out of promotional cards about my<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/70843412/custom-house-portrait-painting-by-susie"> house portraits</a>! I talked to so many folks about my art and that felt great. Hopefully down the road, some of those people will remember my work and commission or buy a painting. <br />
<br />
I met a lot of wonderful artists who gave me terrific tips on selling and booth display. They were encouraging and helpful. It felt wonderful to be part of that community. Many of those artists belong to the same local art organization and were glad to see me participating.<br />
<br />
I made some money. Not a lot, but I made my booth fee and more. I'll definitely try it again, for the exposure, the comaraderie and sales.<br />

Usually they're inspirational words or phrases. Very popular. So, for an upcoming art fair I decided to join the trend. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfRi4MPbATy1Gfx0hV4bnxOtuipP5p7DkGG2odORFYfi3jYpqZ7n0i2bDhz-jHd70Eoser4-8dxpulwcDurXLND0uIO20Hc-9AgZEcLpCn_7WkDGskzcJRdrbbHDMAkeTKCbcO6eYwT8g/s1600/mmm+cupcakes+square.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfRi4MPbATy1Gfx0hV4bnxOtuipP5p7DkGG2odORFYfi3jYpqZ7n0i2bDhz-jHd70Eoser4-8dxpulwcDurXLND0uIO20Hc-9AgZEcLpCn_7WkDGskzcJRdrbbHDMAkeTKCbcO6eYwT8g/s320/mmm+cupcakes+square.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a little 6" x 6" painting I did awhile ago. I added the words with photo shop. I had it printed, cut it out and adhered it to a <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/american-easel-wood-painting-panels/">hardboard panel</a>. I <a href="http://www.krylon.com/products/crystal_clear_acrylic/">varnished</a> it, about three coats. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7uDmyk3yzjuMxCqdBODnWPJDMEZrzQJuEkrIgFYKIj3J18A6OtzWpovKiekR_-c6d44jqvBIDO9ierQc_j8kRRJ01FPXy3soPMaLvexbblajApaWGHRffFjVXRgVxATPx5axibmsCv2M/s1600/Blue+Butterfly+square.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7uDmyk3yzjuMxCqdBODnWPJDMEZrzQJuEkrIgFYKIj3J18A6OtzWpovKiekR_-c6d44jqvBIDO9ierQc_j8kRRJ01FPXy3soPMaLvexbblajApaWGHRffFjVXRgVxATPx5axibmsCv2M/s320/Blue+Butterfly+square.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's another one - it turned out cute! I'm going to sell them with little easels. I thought this would be a good way to use the work I've already done - in a new way. I've see other artists create magnets, book marks, journal covers, etc. with their work. Have you done this?Susie Tenzerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05396942366828912361noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574157460450462815.post-9361774795278498822012-09-24T08:06:00.000-05:002012-09-24T08:06:48.153-05:00Multi-tasking And Multi-paintingI'm definitely a type A. I make lists and try to get in as much as possible during the day. So, no surprise, I'm working on three paintings this week. I've actually never done this before, but I have a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/70843412/custom-house-portrait-painting-by-susie">custom house portrait</a> to finish<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxbjZqGIs-VG6z39GKPqMs7ajIARjeQHPU-9J_6makdlSYszglnHlMnwCyNGMt6bYFI3iLKrWfGIn433EkK5NWNDvif39sySzn7kbkH5AFvnbMQ5JvW2LqZhNktpOBVPm8XSGciPtj2eo/s1600/final+house+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxbjZqGIs-VG6z39GKPqMs7ajIARjeQHPU-9J_6makdlSYszglnHlMnwCyNGMt6bYFI3iLKrWfGIn433EkK5NWNDvif39sySzn7kbkH5AFvnbMQ5JvW2LqZhNktpOBVPm8XSGciPtj2eo/s320/final+house+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

plus I'm trying out two different kinds of paper. I always use <a href="http://www.legionpaper.com/stonehenge/">Stonehenge</a>, but lately I've had a hankering to try some sanded pastel papers. So the first one I bought was <a href="http://www.ampersandart.com/pastel.html">Ampersand pastel paper</a> which comes in several colors but I bought white.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhh2bsZU6WshyHxQKT_6L6YY05gCVtnLt8YCLV-K1qsbqJhXQEY2uqGjuD6z7-nUj7CoaqaPf7ErU5wMUtNtjXhi7x0Bty3u2xnFupesCdvE777W6MCa1OZOBWR-8YRP4XDC-MipVyIuk/s1600/blog+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhh2bsZU6WshyHxQKT_6L6YY05gCVtnLt8YCLV-K1qsbqJhXQEY2uqGjuD6z7-nUj7CoaqaPf7ErU5wMUtNtjXhi7x0Bty3u2xnFupesCdvE777W6MCa1OZOBWR-8YRP4XDC-MipVyIuk/s320/blog+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is 11" x 14". The paper is adhered to a hard board and my plan is to use fixative and varnish when I'm done. I can then pop it into a frame without glass. I also ordered <a href="http://www.uartpastelpaper.com/">Uart pastel paper 800</a> which comes in a tan color.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUzlOsR-RM8ONzmx-Wk7A4EiNUF7R2h190PSvfUPSwOba-dKdwO8wSBNwQGnL0wg_mnq-jKteAE1pv4a234Dt4F85j9uUivxFb9TrayYx8fbPkOolPcOKYmdU2wC1SSYALvLD0AfP9NL0/s1600/blog+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUzlOsR-RM8ONzmx-Wk7A4EiNUF7R2h190PSvfUPSwOba-dKdwO8wSBNwQGnL0wg_mnq-jKteAE1pv4a234Dt4F85j9uUivxFb9TrayYx8fbPkOolPcOKYmdU2wC1SSYALvLD0AfP9NL0/s320/blog+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Love this paper, but it eats up pencils like crazy! I've already gone to Dick Blick to buy pencils twice this week! I also plan to use fixative & varnish on this one. I'll keep you posted on my progress!Susie Tenzerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05396942366828912361noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574157460450462815.post-55562987224327402752012-09-10T07:56:00.000-05:002012-09-10T07:56:19.869-05:00Are The Holidays Here Yet?It's only September, but I'm already thinking about the holiday season. Not so much about buying gifts, but making them. I was juried into an art festival in November, so I'm preparing for that; as well as adding cards and prints with holiday themes to my inventory at <a href="http://chesterfieldwoodicing.blogspot.com/">Wood Icing Gallery</a> and <a href="http://www.historicstcharles.com/listings/Missouri-Artists-on-Main/1169/">Missouri Artists On Main Gallery</a>.<br />

Meanwhile, I'm working on finishing a house portrait. This one is fun! My client has been married for 23 years and he wants to surprise his wife with a collage of the four homes they've lived in for Christmas. We decided to do four separate 4" x 6" paintings, so she can have them matted any way she wants. I commended him for getting his holiday shopping done so early! <br />

My young grandkids and their parents came to visit. We had a great time going to the pool, park, museum and eating - wow, kids are constantly eating! They're gone and now I'm back to work. I just finished a lovely house commission for a wonderful client. She was easy to work with. However, I think that communicating with her often really made the process run smoothly. I talked with her first about what she wanted, repeating her comments at times for clarification. I sent her a rough draft for approval. About half-way through the drawing, I sent another photo to make sure I was on the right track. I emailed the final photo and made adjustments. <br />

I've been very busy painting landscapes lately and I love it! I went to our local botanical garden last month and took this photo:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinSgGdlWOVTheGRSzp_m3GUiOyXE5X_mUJd-yTgm3trbyRVUgCcQalyuN2lWsvBtWHU1jZBz6EAO6zqUMG4voXeWuB73q1RHXgb2I51_G7mII0gIdMS63_azYIdM2H1o4f_LjzeW6K4Qo/s1600/DSCN2218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinSgGdlWOVTheGRSzp_m3GUiOyXE5X_mUJd-yTgm3trbyRVUgCcQalyuN2lWsvBtWHU1jZBz6EAO6zqUMG4voXeWuB73q1RHXgb2I51_G7mII0gIdMS63_azYIdM2H1o4f_LjzeW6K4Qo/s320/DSCN2218.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

It's a building named the Linnaen House after scientist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Linnaeus">Carl Linnaeus</a>. The doors open to a beautiful indoor garden filled with gorgeous, fragrant plants. The pools in front of the house are what caught my eye. I love painting reflections:<br />

I'm excited to have been invited to join a wonderful group of artists at a new gallery in St. Charles, MO, Missouri Artists On Main Gallery. This is a great name for a gallery - celebrating local artists at a space at 321 Main Street in St. Charles, MO. There are lots of mediums represented and I'm thrilled to be part of it! St. Charles is a charming city, located on the Missouri River. Come visit if you're in the area!<br />
<br />
I'm continuing to work on landscapes, pushing the values and incorporating deep shadows. Here's my latest painting, On The Dock (named once again by the woman who does my printing - thanks, Bridget!)<br />

I love taking my paintings over to Bridget without a name & letting her do her magic! What's in a name? A bit of description? Setting the mood? How do you name your work?Susie Tenzerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05396942366828912361noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574157460450462815.post-78633470319741549292012-06-25T10:29:00.000-05:002012-06-25T10:29:48.763-05:00My New Art StudioI'm exhausted. My husband & I had two of our grandkids stay this past weekend while their parents went out of town. What a whirlwind! So I'm having a quiet (ahhhh, no commotion, just silence) day. Last week, before the grandkids came, I painted my dining room white. It was a pale yellow, but I got tired of it. So, while I was paintng, a thought occurred. This room has such great light - I rarely use it - this would make a wonderful art studio! I had all of my art stuff in a spare bedroom, an office/studio type set-up. But I actually thought I'd love to be in this room every day since the bedroom is small & has a tiny window. Here's the dining room before:<br />

I love it! I'm still getting organized. I'm going to take down the chandelier - I keep bumping my head on it since there's no dining room table! The large painting was done by my husband's uncle, an artist. Maybe this is a bit unconventional, but I think I'll be glad to get lots of use out of this room. Here's what I'm working on right now, one of my new landscapes:<br />

Man-MadeI finished my painting of the St. Louis Gateway Arch and it got me to thinking: do man-made structures enhance or detract from their natural surroundings in a painting? Except for the <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/07/uk-top-10-ugly-buildings-to-visit-idUSLNE84600N20120507">top ten ugliest buildings</a> in the world, I guess it depends. If the structure detracts from the scene, but is essential, it's a moot point. In this painting, I wanted the Arch to be the focal point, but I could certainly have just painted the trees and pond. I think buildings, interesting structures or people can bring life into an otherwise boring landscape painting. Unless the landscape has something going on like mood - dark stormy skies, crashing ocean waves, huge mountain rocks. <br />

We both did very well considering we haven't played in several weeks. I used to be a golf fanatic - not so much anymore. I'm much more mellow about my game. I never threw clubs, mind you, but I'd get very upset if my shots were bad or my score was low. Now I'm more interested in how my paintings look. This past week, for example, I stopped working on a landscape painting. The ripples in the water! The distant trees! Nothing was working for me. I did finish a quick ACEO, though. <br />

I also just started a new painting, another landscape. A photo I took during my recent visit to Seattle has amazing shadows and a cute Mallard duck. It's good to work hard, but good to play, too. From the eCatalog: " Handmade and vintage are really an indispensible part of the modern day wedding. As brides, grooms, their families, and friends work to make the day memorable and authentic, it invariably falls upon the unique accessories, gifts and displays of love and affection, to mark the day and event as special."<br />

I read a <a href="http://foxhollowcottage.blogspot.com/2012/05/how-to-watermark-photographs-using.html">tutorial on Fox Hollow Cottage blog</a> and it didn't seem very difficult. I decided not to go back and put watermarks on all of my colored pencil paintings. So, I'm starting with this one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4oATS5aPVQKHrrHeEnL7c0VbIMn63Lk8gSSBxikVRNRpYOhd4CNZG25Db2u-OPSg-BgMxyGiVhHZXUKxxd-9KYl9g2YJ3KbasD-ubxAZMoUna034cfsCbfqSKQaILnzxp5Eu6K40eOms/s1600/Old+Glory+8x10+watermark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4oATS5aPVQKHrrHeEnL7c0VbIMn63Lk8gSSBxikVRNRpYOhd4CNZG25Db2u-OPSg-BgMxyGiVhHZXUKxxd-9KYl9g2YJ3KbasD-ubxAZMoUna034cfsCbfqSKQaILnzxp5Eu6K40eOms/s320/Old+Glory+8x10+watermark.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
Old Courthouse, Old Glory 8 x 10 nfs<br />
<br />
Not for sale, yet. I'm entering it into the Midwest Color 2012 exhibition sponsored by <a href="http://cpsadc103.org/index.php/cpsa-about-us-menu">the CPSA Chicago district Chapter.</a> This painting of the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/jeff/planyourvisit/och.htm">old courthouse</a> in downtown St. Louis, MO. is a reflection in a nearby window. . <br />
<br />
I've been taking photos all around the St. Louis area, for a series on local landmarks. Here's my current work-in-progress:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRblcaocOPFG0tAyJ_ESEzkNpK6HpidZJ8MOQRo0icCvTVd_Cdcq1Q1sDZIgCWdOxyhHLOpa6-iMAogsmDrLZSlbyhKI3Jk1Uto7XHxAg2shMRs_J_pHH1wkctqnAgYi8nBGaWBNpzKow/s1600/arch+wip+watermark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRblcaocOPFG0tAyJ_ESEzkNpK6HpidZJ8MOQRo0icCvTVd_Cdcq1Q1sDZIgCWdOxyhHLOpa6-iMAogsmDrLZSlbyhKI3Jk1Uto7XHxAg2shMRs_J_pHH1wkctqnAgYi8nBGaWBNpzKow/s320/arch+wip+watermark.jpg" width="208" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm saving working on the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/jeff/index.htm">Gateway Arch</a> last - I want to make it stand out. I fiddled with the watermark on this image, making it larger. Do you use watermarks?<br />
